Manuscript Selection

Depends on the package you choose. There is no manuscript selection for their production plan, but they do screen what they publish in their custom plan. These two packages are marketed under different imprints.

Kind of Contract

Non exclusive

2+2=5?

Their contract is not listed in their website, so you have no way of knowing what you are getting into (for more info on dangerous clauses check out Beware Treacherous Clauses Ahead).

Distribution

Through major on-line retailers mostly.

Price Range

Production Plan

$3.50 per page in the final version (this means $700.00 for a 200 pages book, $1,050.00 for a 300 pages one)

Custom Plan

Production plan plus several extras that could run well over $1,000.00. There is a $150.00 fee for them to read your manuscript (refundable if/when you sign a contract).

Free option

There is an option in their website that may enable you to have your book published for free (though I'm not sure what kind of odds you'd be facing here).

Royalties

Royalties are 15% of retail price.

Author's Discount

Discount is 50% on orders of 10 copies or more.

Breakeven point

Between 300 and 400 copies (approximation based on external sales of an average length book published under their production plan).

Basic retail price

Not competitive ($19.95 for a 160 pages book)

Graphics & Tables

Only available in their Custom Plan (and even then they result in additional charges).

Interior Layout

Very basic in their Production Plan. Custom made (and an additional expense) in their Custom Plan.

Cover Options

Template or custom designed (and an additional expense in their Custom Plan).

Choice of Trim Size

Production Plan: No, all books are 6 x 9 in. Custom Plan: Yes.

Color Printing

No

Pros*

They may be willing to consider publishing your book for free.

Good author's discount.

Good distribution.

Small publisher that is not immediately recognized as a vanity press.

Cons*

Setup fee for their Production Plan is moderately expensive when it comes to short books. Very expensive if you are considering their Custom Plan or if you are dealing with a long book.

There is a $150.00 "reading fee" if you want to be considered for their custom plan (refundable if/when you sign a contract).

Not entirely sure if this is a con or a comment, but I'm not reassured by the fact that they openly advice you against using their Production Plan.

Additional Comments*

There are a few things about this publisher that are worth mentioning here:

They operate on a "two imprints" system, which means that the books from each plan come out under different imprints.

Their royalties are good if your book is sold through a retailer, but they are fairly low if it is a direct sale.

Their contract is not included in their website, and I haven't been able to read a full version of it. Beware of the usual suspects that may or may not be lurking in it (things such as "in all languages throughout the world", "the right to feature the work in whole or in part in a compilation or anthology", "the right to continue to sell and distribute after cancellation", etc). Read it very carefully before signing anything.
