The Clearly Confusing World of Self-publishing & POD

A couple of years ago I was looking for a publisher for my first book. I found one, but I figured that my research on the subject of POD publishers could possibly benefit others, so An Incomplete Guide to Print On Demand Publishers was born. In time the guide continued to grow and I added a number of additional resources dealing with various issues related to the publishing process.

Eventually I realized that there were a number of subjects I wanted to cover, but that were clearly out of the scope of the site, so writing a book became the best option. The articles that were featured in the Guide were edited, updated and expanded, and others were written especifically with the book in mind.

The book covers the following subjects:

Do you really know what you are getting into?
What is Print on Demand?
When should you consider POD as an alternative?
What to look for when choosing a POD publisher.
Books without paper (e-books).
Fee or free?
Determining a publisher's current health.
Great expectations, big disappointments.
Beware, treacherous clauses ahead.
Kinds of contacts.
Royalties, the "R" word.
From the press to the reader.
Self-editing your book.
Designing your own cover.
Interior layout basics.
How to choose the right format for your book.
Rights and wrongs of copyright.
From the bowels of the Library of Congress.
Flying solo.
Budget and promotion.
Web design for writers (this information is available in the web design section of the site).

The chapters indicated by bold blue letters are exclusive to the book, the others are partially available through this site.

One thing this book does not do is mention publishers names. There are two main reasons to explain this. The first one has to do with the fact that publishers change too quickly and it would be impossible to keep a book updated. The second one is even more important and it has to do with the fact that a one size fits all approach is not ideal when it comes to choosing a publisher.

Even though it does not mention publishers' names, this book does feature the information you need to know in order to make an informed decision based on your book's specific needs.
