As of February 2005 this company no longer
offers POD services, insisting instead on authors
paying for an offset print-run of several thousand
copies and with a price estimate approaching
$20,000.00. In spite of the fact that this no
longer qualifies as a POD publisher (and seeing how
a reference to them is going to remain here for a
few months anyway) I believe a warning is warranted
concerning the fact that while the information at
their site tries to dazzle you with an awful lot of
numbers, the logic behind their reasoning is flawed
and some of their assertions are downright
ridiculous .
These are only a couple of token issues that can
be used as an example (but they are not the only
ones):
- They claim that 90% of books released by
traditional publishers never earn back their
advances but they suggest that if you make the
initial investment yourself you can expect to
make hundreds of thousands of dollars... what
they are not telling you is that going by their
basic figures chances are you won't recoup your
original investment (in other words, they don't
really explain why your book won't
be one of the 90% that doesn't make it).
- They mix numbers from different examples
without making a clear distinction between them,
hinting at dangerously erroneous
conclusions.
- The information on which their figures are
based is incomplete.
In other words, they may no longer offer POD
services but they sure don't sound like a good deal
to me and an investment of this magnitude is
something you probably don't want to gamble on.
